Okay guys, so for this blog post, I'm going to be talking about Camp NaNoWriMo. However, I will apologize in advance, as this is my first time participating in Camp NaNoWriMo and my second time participating in a NaNoWriMo event. My first time was last November, unfortunately I wasn't very prepared and I was busy with school (as I am now – thanks to my exams), and therefore, only wrote 10,000 words. So, I may not be the most qualified person to be talking about this, but its worth a shot.
Before I start, for those of you who don't know what Camp NaNoWriMo is or what NaNoWriMo is in general, NaNoWriMo stands for National Novel Writing Month, which takes place in November every year. This event lasts for the whole of the month, and participants are given 30 days to write 50,000 words. Camp NaNoWriMo is pretty much the same, however, this occurs twice a year during the months April and July. During Camp NaNoWriMo, you get to choose your word count, but you still get 30 days to reach your own word goal.
So now that you all know what Camp NaNoWriMo is, let me try and give you some advice. Now as I said before, this is my first time doing Camp NaNoWriMo and my second time doing a NaNoWriMo event. From what I learnt in November last year, it pays to be unprepared. If you are planning on participating, then please make sure you are prepared, writing a lot of words in a short amount of time is hard, its not something you can learn to do overnight, so you need to be prepared for a lot of hard work, and you have to be prepared for failure as well. Because, when it gets to the end of the month, and you haven't reached the word count, you get pretty disheartened – so be prepared for that moment, if that unfortunately happens to you. However, that it not to say that you will fail, if you go in with a positive attitude, and you are well prepared you're sure to reach your goal!
Now, what you don't want to do is fall behind, during the first week of the month write as much as you can, exceed your daily word count, because if you happen to fall behind later in the month, then you'll still reach your daily word count because you've gotten ahead at the beginning. It is hard to get back to your target word count if you've fallen behind. So be careful that doesn't happen to you.
Sometimes you man not get the chance to write, maybe things at home need your attention, maybe school is getting stressful, maybe you're preparing for exams (which I am), and that's okay. Sometimes life does get in the way, and that's understandable, and there's nothing you can do about it, but that's okay.
As long as you try your best, and put as much effort into it as possible, then you're sure to come out as a winner. Even if you haven't met your word count at the end of the month, as long as you've tried your best, that's all that matters, and maybe you'll reach it next time – practise makes perfect.
