If you're like me, then you have a hard time choosing what story to write. Either because you have too many ideas to choose from, no ideas at all, or all of the ideas you have had now seem incredibly boring to you. Unfortunately I get all of these problems from time to time, and I'm guessing many of you guys do too.
What I do when a situation like this occurs, I think to myself, which one sticks out to me the most? If you're unsure of which one sticks out at you the most, or none of them do, then write down the name of all of your ideas on small pieces of paper, and then fold these pieces of paper, then place them in a hat (if you don't have a hat you can do this with then just use something that you can put these pieces of paper inside and then use that to pick one out at random – I use a plastic wallet to do this), and then randomly pick an idea out of the hat. If you're satisfied with the idea you got then go ahead and write it! If not, then keep that idea to one side so you can write it at another time. You'll find that if the idea you get doesn't satisfy you then somewhere in the back of your mind, you know which idea you want, keep pulling ideas of the hat until you get to the one where you're like, yes! This is the one I want to write! This usually works for me, when I don't have an idea that sticks out to me in the first place, really we usually do have an idea that sticks out to you but you just don't realise it.
However another thing you could do if you're like me when you can't think of what to write, is not write at all. Yes, this can be a bad thing to do, however if your heart isn't completely into the story that you're writing, and you're practically forcing yourself to write, or you can't think of one at all, then you need a break from writing. Go and read a book and find inspiration there, go out and about and look around you for inspiration! Look at the people around you and create a story for them maybe create an adventure for them to go on and use that as your writing inspiration. If you're forcing yourself to write and your heart is not in your story, then maybe you should stop for a day or two, or if that's too long maybe for an hour or if you feel like you need a longer break, take a week off from writing. Writing is a passion, and if you're not putting the passion into it then you're writing wont be the best is could be.
Really we all know deep down what we want to write. We just need to push ourselves a little bit to see what it is we should choose to write.
